Master’s Field, Balliol College, Oxford

Asset Heritage were approached by Balliol College to advise on the development of a substantial student accommodation complex on its sports grounds located within Oxford’s Central Conservation Area and within the settings of several listed buildings.

Asset produced a Heritage Audit, which assessed the heritage value and sensitivities of the site, noting where and how it could best accommodate new development. This report noted that the 1960s’ Martin Building (designed by Sir Leslie Martin) on the site could represent a key heritage constraint.

As such, we prepared a successful Certificate of Immunity from Listing Application for the Martin Building, underpinned by extensive research into Leslie Martin’s original scheme and landscaping proposals.

Asset also provided heritage advice on the development of the scheme proposals, prepared by Niall McLaughlin Architects, and took part in negotiations with the Council, Historic England, and other stakeholders.

We subsequently prepared a Heritage Impact Assessment to support the planning submission, which was granted consent in 2017.
